Shadow Politics

Family of Secrets coverThe assassination of President John F. Kennedy is the Rosetta Stone of American politics. Was it a conspiracy and if so who, or what, was behind it? From a completely new direction Russ Baker has taken a thoughtful, massively researched look at the Bush family's involvement, as part of his larger study of Bush family political intrigue. As Russ puts it, an alternative title might be "Everything You Think You Know About American Politics Is Wrong." More suggestive than conclusive, Family of Secrets proves, nevertheless, that the gatekeepers aren't giving us the straight story. It was kind of Russ to talk with me and I hope we can do it again. Total runtime an hour and ten minutes. Think deeply.

Howard Hunt confessed to his son on his deathbed that he was involved in the assassination.

[Common law notwithstanding, I don't place much faith in Hunt's dying testament. g.]

Thanks for that, soundz like a good read. Excellent interview.

Maybe the good guys are getting some traction against the bad guys. When a book like Family of Secrets can be published and disseminated so widely, maybe we can start to put these people in jail and get our country back.

I strongly urge listeners to read James Douglass' book JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters.

This is easily the best book for many years on the JFK assassination. It doesn't focus on who did it, but rather why it was done. Nobody who is familiar with the evidence believes the official version of Oswald as the lone nut gunman.

The why is very much more the issue and the answer to that question goes a long way to understanding why the US is the way it has been, was then, is now and in all probability will be in the future.

[ I hasten to add that it seems to me what was at one point possible for the CIA — or an inner group at top levels at the CIA — now no longer is so. g. ]

G, in your comment to J O'Neill, are you referring specifically to the CIA as opposed to other centers of power. After all, you have affirmed your suspicions about 9/ll in past interviews. [Correct. My guess is that all this stuff has been 'privatized' and subcontracted by 'entrepreneurs' for quite a while. Too much of a paper trail in government. g.]

"Suggestive?" Just how many footnotes, facts, and "coincidences" do you need to come a conclusion? It is truly amazing how many Americans just don't quite get it, or how weak-minded they are in their inability to face difficult truths. We have become soft and "obese" mentally as well as physically — far too comfortable and insulated, far too ensconced behind myths.

Elephant in the room in all Baker's interviews I've listened to and in his book: 9/11! How can he subscribe to the official narrative of 9/11 in his book and some how manage not to talk about it at all in interviews after having revealed so much about the state within the state that exists in this country and the immoral, extralegal lengths they will go to (coups, assassinations, etc.) in order to protect the interests, power and wealth of the one percent?

[Good question. Diplomatically, however, I didn't ask it. g.]

I'm catching up on comments on this having gotten Family Of Secrets to read.

The index is often the first place I go in a book of this size.

The question I have is: Since Ray McGovern was close to Poppy, why was he not tapped for an interview as so many others were?

Having heard him often both on here and on Flashpoints from Pacifica and even a couple times in person, he would seem to be a likely subject on the topic of Bush 41.

It was surprising not to see any references to him whatsoever.

[Good point. I've wondered, myself, whether I should ask Ray about this. And there are a number of other missing threads including, as mentioned before, what about 9/11? g.]

People who say anything about my views on 9/11, including, above, "how can he subscribe to the official version" are putting words in my mouth. The simple fact is, I am an investigative journalist, and work carefully, and cannot explore every topic at the same time. I have not had an opportunity to look into 9/11, though I must say that nearly every documentary I have seen on the subject is riddled with holes and wishful thinking. Also, people who criticize independent journalists for not having explored such complex topics should consider how time consuming and expensive it is to delve into these subjects in a scientific manner. The complainers certainly never offer to substantively fund open-ended inquiries.

[That's fair — thanks, Russ. g.]
