Foreign intelligence requires putting oneself into the skin of someone from another culture. Not always an easy thing to do. Nor are the realistic conclusions drawn from such experience always easy to accept. Which is why it's so critical for intelligence to be independent of politics — otherwise, it's pretty much useless flummery. Here's an eclectic conversation with Ray McGovern, a seasoned intelligence practitioner, where we think about some of the problems Mr. Obama has to deal with. It's always a great pleasure to talk with Ray, and an education. Total runtime an hour and thirty four minutes. Enjoy!

An insightful conversation. Let's hope Ray's interpretation of Obama's Afghanistan policy is correct.
Nice for a change to hear a conversation on EP where both participants are in the same room. Ray's impression of Kissinger is worth the price of admission!
