Speaking Truth To Power

The Israel Lobby coverThe Israel Lobby inflicts such significant damage to U.S. national security interests that one book could not possibly be enough for a detailed discussion. Hopefully, others will follow the courageous example set by John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen M. Walt, bringing new ideas about how to measure the Lobby's influence, how to ask the right questions about what should be done to protect the integrity of the U.S. foreign policy process, and why thinking about the problem in moral terms suggests some answers. By no means an easy task. It was a real pleasure and privilege to talk with John, who (even where I may have different views on particular points) is one of the smartest, most principled people I know. Total runtime an hour and thirty two minutes. Listen carefully, think, and redistribute widely.

The main (fair) criticism of Mearsheimer and Walt is that, being realists, they neglect the greater influence of the Military Industrial Complex, upon which the Lobby piggybacks. (I say this before listening, but I will listen!)

An excellent progressive take on the lobby:

The Israel Lobby: How Powerful is it Really?

Not that M&W aren't making a lot of good points!

Listening to the program. On the discussion about a single or a two-state solution based on the pre 1967 boarders. Why?

By now we all know what happened in 1948. If not, read Israeli historian Ilan Pappé.

Israel is stolen country. The Jews did a very brutal ethnic cleansing. Israel belongs to the Palestinians. The Jews has no right to that territory. And if they had, it vanished in 1948.

Talking about a two state solution is rewarding Israel for its criminal ethnic cleansing in 1948.
So what's the solution? Dismantle Israel. It will go very fast if the American aid stops. The Jewish population could emigrate to the USA.

Yes, I am serious.

Given the apparent power of AIPAC over congress, I'm wondering if AIPAC have any ties (or backing) from defense contractors. It would be a logical assumption to make I think.

Great interview. The Prof. had enough time to really explain his position, which was much more "Israel as Jewish state" than I thought.

My understanding is that he is not Jewish, but I constantly have to remind myself of that when I hear his Brooklyn accent.

Thanks again.
