A Belgian Intellectual

Humanitarian Imperialism coverWhen a practicing theoretical physicist turns his attention to politics, picking up the progressive flag, political types should pay attention. Jean Bricmont, of the Catholic University of Louvain, is not only a prolific researcher in his profession but goes well beyond, writing about everything from the philosophy of science ("Determinism, Chaos, and Quantum Mechanics," PDF) to culture (Fashionable Nonsense), to politics — his latest being Humanitarian Imperialism: Using Human Rights to Sell War. I find Jean's ideas challenging, thoughtful, and more than a little helpful in putting America in perspective for Americans. It was a real pleasure talking with Jean, and I hope he'll be a return guest to EP. Total runtime here of an hour and thirty seven minutes. Enjoy!

An interesting interview.

I wish you had probed Bricmont a bit more about the current crisis of the left in France. At one point he said that having realized that it can have no impact on the economic conditions of working people, the left has preoccupied itself with 'moral' squabbles over politically correct speech and the like.

I would like to know why the left believes it is helpless to change economic conditions.

Finally a European has something candid to say about Israel. Something you'd never hear in ‘langue-de-bois’ France without being threatened with the dissent-stifling hate-speech truncheon.

Why is it that one can freely criticize the actions of any nation on earth without being labeled a racist, except Israel?

Why is it that any genocide in history can be freely discussed, except the Holocaust?

Call me dumb, but can someone explain to me what justification the Brits used to create the previously non-existent state of Israel right in the middle of another country, i.e. Palestine?

According to George Galloway, Israel has broken more UN resolutions than all other countries put together. But still no one dares to point out the elephant in the room. It amazes me how brilliant the Israeli PR machine has been at perverting any genuine debate on its policies using the threat of anti-semitism. Just imagine for one second, say, if America could somehow garner a similar dissent crushing PR tool; it would be unstoppable.
