Fever-Tree

A selection of Fever-Tree beveragesAs a little kid in the Belgian Congo I drank a lot of tonic water. I don't know what brands, or how it was made, but I've had a taste for tonic water ever since. The problem is, most tonic waters — one might say all major brands — are crap. I seem to remember that as a teenager there were some here in the States that weren't too bad, but now, Blech! So the other day I was shopping in the new Whole Foods near here and noticed a brand I hadn't seen before: Fever-Tree. It's hideously expensive but I figured, what the hell, and tried some. It's great!! Out of this world great!! A real thirst quencher. And, to be honest, the 200 ml bottles are a good size. Most highly recommended.

I thought I was the only one who had tonic alone — no gin, no vodka. I thought it was forbidden to drink quinine water alone in these United States. But a couple months ago I got sick of the alcohol, threw caution to the winds and started drinking Schweppes alone. Delicious! And I was not struck by lightning. Actually for me it's better all by itself — the slightly bitter taste is cleaner. I like Schweppes but I'll try Fever-Tree, although I'm a little cautious about the "hideous" price.

[About $5.50 for a four pack of 200 ml bottles. g.]

Two hundred ml is only 6.7 ounces. Is that right??

[Correct. They are small bottles. g.]

I found it at The Food Emporium on Broadway and 90th here in Manhattan. On sale for $4.99. Yes it is delicious. I did a blind taste taste with two glasses and the Fever Tree was better. But Schweppes is pretty good (the biggest difference is that Fever Tree uses cane sugar and Schweppes uses corn syrup). The difference in price means that for me, Fever Tree will be a once-in-a-while treat. I like its niftily shaped small bottle, which is probably why it costs so much more.

[Check their website — linked in my post above — and you'll see that they're using top quality quinine and some other very unusual ingredients. g.]

I checked the local Whole Foods here in San Mateo, CA, and the Tonic Water was completely sold out (but there was plenty of Lemon and Ginger). Apparently EP is dictating customer behavior coast to coast.
