President Twinkie
The middle of last month, All Souls College at the University of Oxford, in England, decided to drop the most famous part of its entrance exam: the one-word essay question. Candidates were given one word in an envelope, and three hours, to write an intelligent essay. But eventually, essentially, the All Souls dons decided that the parameters of the exam produced more fluff than substance. Perhaps, indeed, that had been its original but forgotten purpose. Who knows?
President Twinkie evidently hadn't heard the news. As an example of saying nothing nicely, at length, President Twinkie's speech last night passed with flying colors. But his fact-free rhetoric had even Mark Shields seeking something positive to say for it. There was just nothing there. Nothing. To be honest, I'm not sure the verbalizer in chief understands the gravity of the problem. And — a more minor point that also bugs me — I don't get how he thinks he's able to blame other people for giving him bad advice regarding whether the regulatory apparatus was working or whether the rigs in deep water were actually safe. His job is to get good advice. For Pete's sake, doesn't he even know that?! Is anybody in charge? And please don't tell me BP...
I leave the final word to the comics, but for me the president is becoming something of a joke.

I watched O speak. Garbage.
Closing with suggestions that we need answered prayers to figure this out is, for a godless elite like me, outrageous.
How about telling people to figure the gulf is permanently ruined (because it is) and to stop being wasteful exceptionalists?
Goddamnit.

Also, for those whose memories do not extend back to 1979, Rachel Maddow present's a historical review of Transocean's history including the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster in 1979 which lasted for 9 months untill 2 relief wells were drilled. That oil well disaster occurred at a depth of 200 feet versus the 5000 feet depth of BP's disaster.

In the past 31 years, the oil companies have made great gobs of profits; unfortunately, they continue their inept practices with regard to oil drilling technology and instead spend their money on lobbyists and buying the USA government.
