The Triumph of Hope

Man Charting War, Norman Rockwell 1944Those Norwegian rascals! They figure a massive pre-emptive strike at Mr. Obama's ego — the Nobel Peace Prize, don't you know — will make making peace all the more irresistible. It probably can't hurt, at least I don't see how it could, but the Nobel Committee might want to reconsider its lack of any provisions for revoking the prize. Things may well turn out much, much, much worse than they expect.

If the Nobel Prize had any prestige left, this certainly has to nail it in the box.

The Right Livelihood Award was created as an alternative to the politicization of the Nobel.

I had only lately become aware of it due to Amy Goodman winning last year. Her news program had some features on other recipients when the announcement was made.

Right Livelihood means the right person in the right profession. There are many women who are recipients in recent years. But I made a direct request to Amy Goodman via Democracy Now to nominate Will Allen because the spirit of his work typifies that of other Right Livelihood recipients.

Note: 'right livelihood' is a Buddhist principle that to achieve enlightenment, employment in fields which bring suffering, like being president of the USA or an armaments manufacturer or a financier, are inadvisable.
