Armed, Angry Lunatics
Let's do a thought experiment. We go back in time to when W. was dictator. He's had a change of heart and decides to allow federal funds for stem cell research. Never mind why. So to shore up his base he goes to a rally in Scottsdale, AZ — the White House staff figures that more liberal conservatives like to party there. But when W. arrives at his rally he's greeted by several dozen fanatical "pro-life" advocates, brandishing an assortment of assault rifles and high powered semi-automatic pistols. What would have happened to the demonstrators? They would have been tossed in jail, that's what, and some kind of Patriot Act justification would have been figured out later. Much, much later some might have been released but it's a good bet that at least a few would have been kept in jail indefinitely, pour encourager les autres.
I can't think of a single instance of gun brandishing near W. Can you?
The point is, it's not about "gun rights" but about (1) the safety of the President of the United States and (2) the safety of those who attend presidential events. Nobody except law enforcement should be allowed to openly carry a gun anywhere near these events. If Federal laws are inadequate as written, then Congress should write one that covers the situation.
Also, to put it bluntly, it's not about free speech but about malicious intimidation. Of course, we already know that... don't we?

It was before he was "elected" but he was the he was the presumptive nominee at that point.

While it was not obvious on most of the news shots the person carrying the rifle, Arizona, was an African American. This has been missed in some areas. In the video that he and his group published on youtube it becomes clear that they are disciples of Ron Paul. Not my favorite people in the world to be clear. These are the people that produced the mustache photoshops of President Obama.
