The Energy Well
I've long been interested in odd energy related efforts. Black Light Power, for example, which for many years has been "near" releasing products (and in which I almost invested but the cost of the entry ticket was too high), has always drawn charges of fraud, but nevertheless also has eminent people of the requisite background on its board, has published—a lot—in mainstream refereed journals, and seems to have genuinely found something, though I'm not sure their explanation for why what they've found happens is correct. The latest in such endeavors comes from Steorn, a small, high-tech firm in Dublin, that recently took out a full page advertisement in The Economist, challenging scientists to examine its free energy technology. My gut tells me that something along these lines is possible and that we may be near finding it. If we do, that means another, faster-paced scientific revolution.

Ah. Free Energy. The Perpetuum Mobile of the scientific age.
As the saying goes "Nothing succeeds like success" and Randall Mills (Medical Doctor) has been nothing if not successful over the last 20 years in extracting huge quanities of venture capital from investors pockets while producing nothing saleable in the process.
As always, he still needs a few dollars more.
He has managed to produce reams of guff which is referenced on the Blacklight website. As reputable physics journals will not publish his more nonsensical stuff he has published it in a book, The Grand Unified Theory of Classical Quantum Mechanics, which he describes thusly:
http://www.blacklightpower.com/theory/book.shtml
"Dr. Mills has built on the field generally known as Quantum Mechanics by deriving a new atomic theory of Classical Quantum Mechanics (CQM) from first principles, which unifies Maxwell’s Equations, Newton’s Laws, and Einstein’s General and Special Relativity. The central feature is that physical laws hold over all scales, from the scale of subatomic particles to that of the cosmos."
If this is the case and Dr. Mills has produced the Unified Field Theory which eluded the best minds in Physics (including Einstein) for the best part of the 20th century, and it is surprising not to find Dr. Mills in the Physics Hall of Fame with a Nobel ribbon round his neck.
Dr. Mills Hydrino theory is widely regarded as nonsense. A good summary of the objections (put better than I can and at greater length than I care to) can be found here - scroll down to the entry by ChemicalLaser.

Regarding Steorn
Having listened to 2 radio interviews with the Principals, watched the promotional video, and delved through their website , I'm inclined to think that Steorn is also involved in a well funded scam.. Their story feels as thin and vague as their company evidently is.

Very cleverly done. How many people did you see? Ok now look carefully at that page. There are only 4 guys there. Where are the science, technical and support staff? Micromotors? This look like a tiny marketing outfit.
What the scam is I don't know, but I suspect it's something to do with internet marketing.
For instance...
http://www.steorn.net/images/sean4_small.jpg
Why is this 'testing rig' (aka a pile of aluminium junk and a couple of electric motors) on the floor of a photographers studio and not pictured in action on the bench of a fully equipped lab? - which I assume they must own (though there is no indication of such on the website) if they were originally developing high efficiency micro-motors.
company history...

Well nothing specific to check out there. Hardly worth the effort of downloading.
Where's the beef, boys? If it actually works and produces more energy than it consumes, all you had to do was produce a small version of your perpetuum mobile and show it on TV, with an open challenge to any scientist to debunk it. If you can build a better mouse trap the world will beat a path to your door, either to buy you out in order to support existing interests or put your world beater into production.
As always , I'm skeptically on hold till I see some beef. Till then I will not be holding my breathe or signing up for anything at the Steorn website. My gut and my wallet have always told me that there is no free lunch.

Heres an interesting article from The Sunday Business Post of Ireland which gives the real company history of Steorn, which Steorn ommits to post on its own website.
Dotcom boom to dotcom bust to a 'leading' Intellectual Property (IP) research and development company (Appears to have only ever been involved in the development of two technologies about which there is no detail) to free energy boosters... Hmm. Steorn seems quite keen to keep its disfunctional past under a bushel..

Regarding Steorn's Free Energy: Be nice if it's real...but....If it sounds like, looks like, feels like and tastes like a load of crap...it probably is.
The Steorn website is nothing but a slick advertisement with no hard science backing it up. (That's the sonds like, looks like part of the test)My guess is they will soon be selling "how-to" books, videos, DVD's and roadshow appearences. I'm sure that since thye were a "dot-bomb" before, they already have some advertiser-based web-site traffic deals in place.
