Rendition Opposition
Good for the New York Times, reporting further on US torture flights. And there's new news coming out of the BBC and the Guardian. Next week when Secretary of State Rice visits Europe she's sure to get a frosty reception. But the Europeans should connect the dots and not limit their outrage over torture flights to the particulars.
The US, with the largest absolute number of people held in prison of any country in the world, and by far the largest percentage of population, has become the world's pre-eminent lock-down culture. Add to that our enthusiastic application of the death penalty and the picture becomes clear: Renditions and torture are only minor extensions of the American regime's prevailing mindset. This is the ground European protests must seize, just as in an earlier era American leaders decried the police state system behind the Iron Curtain.
